bsnmpd HOST-RESOURCES-MIB for RELENG_6 and amd64

Although, it most definately is winter in the nothern hemisphere, some of the Summer of Code projects are still producing valuable code. Today, harti committed code from Victor Crucerus project that converted the host-resources-mib from using libdisk to libgeom, which was also keeping it from working on the amd64 architecture. So I upgraded simons amd64 box, which also runs a ports tinderbox to todays -CURRENT to test this. It works out-of-the-box, so I reverted the patch that prevented hostres from building by default on amd64. But more importantly, we now have graphs of CPU and memory usage of the tinderbox :)

I also tested if the code worked on RELENG_6. Here I found a problem with the geom module that was renamed from g_md to geom_md, but this should be an easy fix. If the module was loaded by hand, the code just works like a charm.

There are more bloggers than blog readers

Let’s write another useless entry here as it has now finally been shown beyond reasonable doubt that noone is reading this anyway: There are more bloggers than blog readers .

Flu

Isn’t it great to come back to work after a couple of days abroad, only to find half the office is home with the flu? So I decided to join the club and went home yesterday. Only, for me there’s no time to enjoy the wonders of a runny nose, a headache and all the other fun of being ill, I’m also the only one that can take over for a collegue and she has bought a new house and is off work to move. Oh joy, a bed, a cup of tea and… a laptop.

Home sweet home

Finally back from EuroBSDCon in Basel, Switserland. It was a great conference, lots of good talks and lots of socializing ;) Basel itself is quite a nice town, especially the old center and the river, but it’s even more expensive than Denmark. The flights today went pretty smoothly, so I was home little over 4 hours after flying out of Basel to find not much snail mail, but a huge amount of email and it’s only been 5 days while I stilled checked the most important stuff during the conference. Tomorrow it’s back to work, through the snow.

The Real Erwin Lansing

As a continuation of the quest for The Real Tom Rhodes, this years question is: Who is The Real Erwin Lansing?

Pictures from EuroBSDCon

Have a look at the pictures from this years EuroBSDCon in Basel, Switserland. Please, don’t be fooled by their misrepresenting our mood so it actually looks like we have fun, this is serious work.

D.A.D. concert

D.A.D.

Yesterday, one of the biggest danish rockbands D.A.D. played in town and I promised to lend a hand. As usual, D.A.D. put up a great show and I had about the best view one can get for the first half of the concert, just behind the scene, halfway up the rows of seats. I thought I’d only have to do the simple task of guarding a fire exit and make sure noone gets in or out, unless in case of fire of course, and keep an eye out for “real” trouble so I could call security or medics over the radio, I was in for a surprise. Of course, all volunteers on evening duty lend a hand with breaking down the podium. Anyway, after the concert was over just after midnight, there were only a mere 4 hours left of carrying lights, instruments, loudspeakers, etc. in the waiting trucks and breaking down the stage and whatever else needed to be done. On rare occasions you have to love changing from summer- to wintertime. At least I got one hour more sleep.

Unplanned service window

It must be one of those weeks where every piece of hardware that can fail, will fail. While beastie is still synching its data after the last breakdown, my main server, koala, suddenly disappeared. I was already fearing that it had burned down yet another CPU fan, which would just be typical few days before leaving on holiday, but it turned out our electrician was working in the same rack as koala and had by accident pushed to the power cord which fell out.
On the bright side, I have just bought some extra RAM for koala and was planning on installing it after I returned from holiday, but now koala was down anyway it seemed like a good time to do it now. So far it looks like koala is very pleased with its extra RAM. And it all ends well in the end.

Svampetur

The yearly mushroom trip with my old biology department was yesterday. We didn’t find that many mushrooms, but we had the best weather one can wish for in Denmark this time of year, so it was great walking around in the forest. And of course the usual party :-)
Pictures are here.
